Eureka City Schools (ECS) is a special place for me. Being a third-generation Humboldt County native, coming home to be the Superintendent of the District was a fantastic opportunity, where I have now served for more than a decade. My father graduated from Eureka High School in 1962 and I have two children who graduated from Eureka High School. One is enrolled in UC Santa Barbara and the other is in graduate school at Chico State preparing to be a teacher. My youngest is currently enrolled in one of our schools. I am proud of the preparation ECS has provided to my children and the children in our community.
Unlike other more urban school districts in the State, ECS offers a small school environment and a variety of options for all students. In California, mid-sized school districts have around 15,000 students, and districts are generally considered small when they have a student enrollment under 5,000. ECS has an enrollment of 3,600 students, and I consider this to be a perfect size. We are large enough to maintain a considerable breadth of quality and diverse programs but small enough to provide a personal touch.
Thank you for your interest in ECS and for being a part (or considering being a part) of our educational community!
Sincerely,
Fred Van Vleck, Ed.D.
Superintendent
