- Published: Tuesday, August 7, 2012
The start of the school is just around the corner and we are excited to welcome you to the BEST middle school in the world!! I hope you had a restful and relaxing summer and are as excited about the start of school as we are here at Zane. We know this will be a great year for you and that you will learn and grow in so many ways.
Below you will find list of important information and dates that will help us all start off the year in a positive way. Please read through the information below and if you have any questions feel free to give us a call. We are here to help. I would like to remind you one more time about the Whooping Cough immunization that is necessary for every student in grades 7 – 12 this year. If you have not gotten this shot yet, please make arrangements to get it before the start of school and provide proof to the office.
Back to School Packets will be mailed home to you mid-August. Every student, new and returning, will need to complete the information in the packet and return it when you come to pick up your schedule.
First Day of School is a full day - Monday, August 27. Regular bell schedule will be 8:30 A.M. - 3:05 P.M. daily.
7th GRADE STUDENTS:
7th Grade Schedule Pick up. 7th graders may pick up their schedule and textbooks on Tuesday, August 21st from 11:30 A.M. – 4 P.M. Come to the cafeteria with your completed and signed packet and exchange it for your schedule, planner, and textbooks. It is not necessary for a parent to accompany you, but if the packet is not completely filled out, or if signatures are missing, you will not be able to complete enrollment and pick up your schedule.
7th Grade Orientation is Friday, August 24th from 930 A.M. - 1230 P.M. in the gym. This is an opportunity to learn everything a student needs to know about Zane and how things work here. Not only will students learn about Zane, but they will meet lots of people and make new friends. You don’t want to miss this orientation if you are a new 7th grader. You will learn everything you need to know about how to be successful in middle school, and it will make the first day of school less stressful and so much easier. This is a student assembly with large and small group interactions, fun games and ice breakers, and get-to-know-you types of activities that are all designed to orient students as to how middle school works, get them comfortable on campus, and address their concerns in an enjoyable manner. Unfortunately, we don’t have room for parents in this assembly, but know that we are just a telephone call or an email away and are available to answer your questions or address your concerns. Students should wear comfortable clothes that allow for easy sitting, standing and movement. There is no need to bring a backpack or any stuff…travel light. Students should arrive by about 9:20 A.M. and can be picked up at 12:30 P.M. If you have questions, please call Trevor Hammons at 441-2472.
Algebra 1 Readiness Test will be offered to those incoming 7th grade students who test “advanced” in math. Students who meet the criteria will be considered for Algebra 1, which is an advanced level 8th grade class. The test will be given at Zane Middle School on the following two dates: Wednesday, August 15th at 4:30 P.M. and on Monday, August 20th at 4:30 P.M. (please pick the test date that works best in your schedule). The test will take approximately seventy minutes and will be administered, by Mrs. Baker in Room P1. The test will be graded upon completion and results of the test will be provided to the students and their parents the same day. Algebra 1 teachers have developed the criteria below as a minimum entry into the class. Through years of experience, they have found that students who meet these minimum criteria are successful in this advanced level class, and those students who don’t meet the criteria have not been successful.
Algebra 1 Readiness Criteria
- Advanced score on CST – please bring your child’s 5th grade CST Report (6th grade if available)
- Evidence of excellent study habits – GPA in 5th and 6th grade of 3.5 or better OR 3+’s and 4’s on an ECS Standards Based Report Card (please bring your child’s 6th grade report card with you on the test day).
- Passing the Entrance Readiness Test
8th GRADE STUDENTS:
8th Grade Schedule Pick up. 8th graders may pick up their schedule and textbooks on Wednesday, August 22nd from 11:30 A.M. – 4 P.M. Come to the cafeteria with your completed and signed packet and exchange it for your schedule, planner, and textbooks. It is not necessary for a parent to accompany you, but if the packet is not completely filled out, or if signatures are missing, you will not be able to complete enrollment and pick up your schedule.
There will be more information in your packet, so please read through it carefully. Remember packets will be mailed and you will need to have it completed and all parent signatures BEFORE you come to pick up a schedule. Incomplete packets will not be accepted and students will not receive a schedule until the completed packet is turned in. Again, welcome to what I know will be the best school year you have experienced so far. Don’t hesitate to call if you have any questions or if there is something that we can help you with.
