Kindergarten Frequently Asked Questions
When is the first day of school?
The first day of school is August 23, 2017. Our elementary schools begin at 8:10 and conclude at 2:05 on Tuesday through Friday. Monday is an early release day with school ending at 1:25. Parents will receive a letter from their child’s school welcoming your student and providing specific information about school events.
When will I be notified what school my child is enrolled in for the fall?
If your child resides within the Eureka City Schools district boundaries, you will be notified in March of your child’s placement. You will begin to receive information from the elementary school with school specific information. If your child resides in a district other than Eureka City Schools, you will be notified during the summer months, once all Eureka City Schools district students have been placed.
What is the process for completing an interdistrict transfer?
Parents must complete the county approved “Application for Interdistrict Attendance Permit” form. The process begins with the District of Residence in which your child presently lives. The form must first be approved by the District of Residence before Eureka City Schools can consider your application for enrollment.
When does my child need to have their required immunizations completed?
The required immunizations must be completed before your child may attend school in August. The school district is required to verify completion of immunizations through documentation of your child’s yellow immunization record.
When does my child need to have their physical examination completed?
The exam must be completed within the six month period before entering kindergarten. You will need to present a completed copy of the examination before the first day of school.
Is transportation provided?
Limited transportation is available. Bussing is only available within specific boundaries and is linked to a child’s school of residence and attendance. Parents must complete an application to receive transportation and will be notified by our Transportation Department if their application is approved. Information can be obtained by calling the Transportation Department at 441-2503. If you select for your child to attend a school other than your school of residence, you will be responsible for transporting your child.
Is before or after school care available at the schools?
Eureka City Schools does not provide supervision before the school day begins. After school care is available for eligible students. Applications become available in May of each year.
Is lunch served at school?
Breakfast and lunch are available daily. Information regarding free or reduced lunches will be sent home the first day of school. Breakfast is free for everyone and is served starting at 7:45.
Is my child eligible for the new Transitional Kindergarten program?
Transitional Kindergarten (TK) is the first year of a two-year kindergarten program. Students who will turn five between September 1 and December 2 are eligible to attend Eureka City Schools Transitional Kindergarten program. The district’s Transitional Kindergarten classrooms will place only Transitional Kindergarten students together in this classroom for the full day.
