Staffing Changes 2014-2015

I hope your summer is off to a relaxing and restful start!

As is usually the case during this time of the year, we have some changes in our administrative and coaching staff that I would like to share with all of you.

Tracie Kern, who has worked for Eureka City Schools for the past 4 years, most recently as the Principal of Grant, has accepted a Principal / Superintendent Position in the Cinnabar Charter and Elementary School District in Petaluma.  We wish Ms. Kern well in her future endeavors and want to extend my appreciation for what she has done for the children attending Eureka City Schools.

Serving as the new Principal at Grant Elementary will be Martin Goddi.  Martin has worked for Eureka City Schools for the past 19 years.  He taught at Washington Elementary, Grant Elementary and Zane Middle School.  He has a multiple subjects credential along with a Social Science Credential and Administrative Services Credential, all of which were earned at HSU.  Most recently, Mr. Goddi has served the District as the Dean of Students at Eureka High School.  Mr. Goddi is extremely excited to return to his elementary roots.

With Mr. Goddi leaving EHS, this will leave a vacancy for an Assistant Principal/Dean position.  This position will be posted both internally and externally.

Long-time Eureka High Physical Education Teacher and Current Counseling Director at Winship Stephanie Jackson has accepted a position in another District.  This leaves a vacancy at Winship for an Assistant Principal.

Chris Cox, music teacher for the past 14 years (with a little break in the middle), most recently at Eureka High School and Zane Middle School, has been appointed to fill the Assistant Principal vacancy at Winship.  Mr. Cox has a Single Subject Music Credential and his Preliminary Administrative Services Credential.  He earned his Bachelor’s Degree from Fresno State University and his Master’s Degree from Ithaca College in New York.  He has past experience as a Lecturer at HSU and as a Department Chair.

Also joining the team at Winship is Bryan Kidd as their new Counseling Services Director.  Mr. Kidd has worked for Eureka City Schools for almost two years as an Elementary Counselor at Grant Elementary.   He has a Pupil Personnel Services Credential (School Counseling) and a Bachelor’s Degree and a Master’s Degree earned at Azusa Pacific University.  He has five years of experience serving as a Special Education Aide.  Mrs. Cloney-Gardiner and her team are very excited to have Mr. Cox and Mr. Kidd at Winship.

With Mr. Kidd leaving Grant Elementary, this will leave a vacancy for an Elementary Counselor position.  With Mr. Cox leaving EHS and Zane, it will leave a vacancy for a Music Teacher.  These positions will be posted both internally and externally.

Finally, we have hired a new team of instructional coaches to work with Beth Foster to, among other things, continue to support the implementation of the teacher created District Instructional Norms.  We are excited that we have some fantastic talent within Eureka City Schools to tap into to support instruction.  Below is a brief biography of our new team.

Maikken Bass graduated from Humboldt State University with a degree in Liberal Studies: Language Studies and Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages certificate. She has a Multiple Subjects Teaching Credential from HSU in 1990, and has been teaching in ECS since then.  Mrs. Bass was recently bestowed  the 'Friend of the Young Child Award' from Humboldt Association for the Education of Young Children; the Excellence in Teaching Award from Humboldt County Office of Education in 2014; and she was the ECS Teacher of the Year for 2014.

Kristi Puzz went to HSU where she earned her Bachelor's Degree in Liberal Studies along with her Multiple Subjects Credential and her Preliminary Administrative Credential.  She has been teaching for 20 years; 18 years in ECS working at Marshall, Jefferson, and Alice Birney.  She was an Instructional Coach at Alice Birney and Lafayette during the 2013-14 year.  Mrs. Puzz has participated in many site and District level committees during her tenure at ECS.  She is also an Apple Pin Recipient.

Donna Doherty received her Bachelor’s Degree and credential from HSU.  She started teaching at EHS 30 years ago.  Mrs. Doherty is a Constructing Meaning Trainer for the District and has helped design and co-facilitate workshops on Cultural Diversity and Resiliency. Two of her former student teachers now work at EHS.  Along with serving on many site and District committees, she served as an Instructional Coach at Eureka High School during the 2013-14 school year.

Rebecca Baugh has a Bachelor’s Degree of Science in Biology and a Master’s Degree in Education with an emphasis in teaching diverse populations in addition to her two single subject teaching credentials in Chemistry and Biology.   This is Rebecca’s 8th year teaching for Eureka City Schools, and her 12th year overall. She has taught mostly Biology and Chemistry, but has also taught Algebra, Pre-Algebra, and Life Science.  Rebecca was recently awarded the Carlston Family Foundation Teacher Initiative where she was selected as 1 of 5 teachers across the state to receive a grant for her classroom and become part of a mentoring program to help beginning teachers.  She has also been a BTSA Support Provider for 4 years.

Kristin Sobilo received her Bachelor's at Humboldt State University with a minor in Spanish and TESOL and her Administrative Credential at Humboldt State University.  She has been teaching for 19 years, 18 of which have been at ECS.  Kristin has received the following awards:  PTA Service Award, Humboldt County Excellence in Teaching, Wells Fargo Stagecoach Teacher of the Year, Eureka City Schools Teacher of the Year 2013, and she was the Zane Teacher of the Year 2013.  Along with serving on many site and District committees, she served as an Instructional Coach at Zane Middle School during the 2013-14 school year.
