Eureka City Schools is proud to announce the appointment of Kathleen Cloney-Gardiner to the position of Principal to Washington Elementary School.

Kathleen was born and raised in Eureka attending local schools.  She began her career with Eureka City Schools as a student teacher at Washington Elementary and became a full-time teacher at Washington in 3rd and 6th grades.  When Zane and Winship transitioned into middle schools, Kathleen moved to Zane to teach 6th grade.  Eventually she added a half-time position as Zane’s Student Services Coordinator until moving into the position of Assistant Principal.  After a year, she accepted the Assistant Principal position at Eureka High School. 

Kathleen has come full circle and returns to her roots at Washington as the new Principal.

This year some Eureka City Schools site administrators will be adding to their experience by serving our students in different positions within the district. 
Kathleen Honsal has accepted the position of Associate Principal of Eureka High School.  EHS Principal Rick Jordan is very happy to have Ms. Honsal join his administrative team for 2010-2011.  Lafayette welcomes  veteran Principal Jan Schmidt, who has served as principal at Alice Birney and Washington Elementary Schools.  Assistant Principal Valerie Gardner will join new Principal Chuck Bush as his Assistant Principal for Zane Middle School.  Eureka City Schools is pleased with the changes as these seasoned administrators continue their careers within Eureka City Schools.

 
District Office Closed August 17, 2010
August 16, 2010
Due to construction on Harris Street, the District Office will be without electricity all day on August 17, 2010. As a result, the main office for Eureka City Schools at 3200 Walford Avenue will be closed. The office will be open and regular business will resume at 8:00 a.m. on Wednesday, August 18. Thank you.
 
Step Into Safety: Back to School Family Fun Day
August 3, 2010
A Pedestrian and Bike Safety Workshop for Eureka City Elementary School students and families will be held on Saturday, August 28, from 9:00 a.m. through 12:00 p.m. at Washington Elementary School. Families will have the opportunity to participate in hands-on activities at various stations that focus on specific transportation modes such as walking, bicycling, riding the school bus, and traveling by private car or carpool.

Eureka Adult School
July 12, 2010
Although scaled down considerably, Eureka City Schools Adult School continues to offer the Project LEARN (Let Education Assist Recovery Now) classes to inmates at the Humboldt County Jail.  In addition, after a short vacation by the instructor, the Traumatic Brain Injury classes will continue as will GED (high school equivalency diploma) courses.  Ongoing evaluation of other traditional Adult Education courses will continue as more is known about the state budget.
 
New Principal for Zane Middle School

Eureka City Schools is very happy to announce the appointment of Mr. Charles “Chuck” Bush as the new principal for Zane Middle School.

Chuck has over twelve years of experience as a school administrator, most of which is at the middle school level.  He is currently the principal of Pacific Elementary School in Sacramento City Unified School District.  Prior to this position, he was principal for Frank Wright Middle School in Imperial in Southern California and then moved to Northern California where he became the principal for Silverado Middle School in Roseville.  Chuck’s background also includes the positions of middle school assistant principal and grades 7/8 teacher.

AVID Student and Eureka High Sophomore, Baba Lee, Wins 2 Writing Competitions
June 2, 2010
Baba Lee won the Regional AVID Write-Off Contest for 2010 in his grade level. The topic this year was “Save Me a Spot in College.” The AVID team has participated in this contest every year, but this was the first year they used the same topic as the scholarship completion to encourage students to enter both. We are all proud of his achievement. Baba Lee, and his teacher, Aleen Arbaugh, received recognition and gift certificates from Barnes & Noble for the AVID competition, and Baba also received a $500. scholarship for winning the second competition.  Arbaugh said these were the most inspiring papers to read this year, “every student in each of the AVID classes wrote a paper and the team of teachers were so supportive with regard to lesson planning and prompts that it went off without a hitch.”
