Welcome Back Students and Parents

Greetings Parents and Students,

I hope you had the opportunity for some rest and relaxation during the summer, as well as time to enjoy friends and family. The first day of school is Wednesday, August 23rd, and our staff are eager to welcome you to the new school year.

The Board of Trustees is excited that we have been actively working to put the Measure S dollars to work. Measure S was passed in 2012 by voters within the Eureka City Schools boundaries and we are proud we have used this bond to bring in millions of matching dollars from Sacramento. Progress this summer includes a complete redesign of the Alice Birney and Lafayette parking and student drop off areas, a new pedestrian entrance at Zane to discourage students from darting across West Street, the greenhouse and shade house at Winship, and the modernization of the Music Building at Eureka High School. Many other items on the project list are in the planning stages - one of particular note is the Eureka High School Gymnasium. We just completed the Environmental Impact Report, and the Board has given direction to build a new gymnasium. We are developing plans now. For a full list of projects and timelines, please click on the Measure S icon on the District website. As with any construction, there is likely to be inconveniences in the process, but the outcome is worth it! Please be patient as we improve our facilities for your children and our community.

As we start the new school year, please welcome the next generation of educators and support staff joining our team. We are proud of the quality of our entire staff, including the new hires to Eureka City Schools. This year, we are focusing on expanding and strengthening communication throughout the District. This includes staff, parents, students and community. Our District Facebook page has nearly 1,000 "likes". Please "like" the Eureka City Schools and the Facebook page of your student’s school to keep current on our announcements and events.

Exceptional student learning continues to be our top priority. We are looking forward to partnering with you to provide the best possible learning experiences for your children. Every day counts, so your efforts to make sure your students are in school is appreciated!

Sincerely,

Fred Van Vleck, Ed.D.
